GREEN TEA

The Chinese have used green tea for thousands of years. Recently it was introduced on the American natural health market. Green tea is rich in bioflavonoids compounds that help fight damaging free radicals. One class of bioflavonoids, polyphenols, is especially abundant in this herb. Specifically, the catechins (polyphenols with multiple linked ring-like structures) have extraordinary antioxidant ability, especially in the brain.

Green tea is well-established as a potent source of powerful antioxidants--the same beneficial compounds found in fruits and vegetables, and even in red wine. The leaf also boasts the presence of a superstar antioxidant called EGCG (epigallocatechin-gallate) which is over 200 times more powerful than vitamin E in neutralizing the pro-oxidants and free radicals that attack lipids in the brain.  Green Tea contains other notable substances, including fluoride, catechins, and tannins. Because it contains astringent tannin compounds, green tea in moderation can ease indigestion and other forms of stomach upset.

Green tea extract helps with thermogenesis and aids in the metabolism of fat. Known for years as a powerful antioxidant, it may also be helpful in shedding fat. The most obvious benefit to dieters is that it works without increasing the heart rate most often found in diet aids.  The increased heart rate from other thermogenic supplements may leave dieters jittery and eventually, most dieters stop using the supplement and gain weight back. Now through using green tea extract, dieters get the weight loss benefits without any of the jittery effects, especially in overweight individuals with hypertension and other cardiovascular complications.

Scientific Support
Recent scientific studies illuminate green tea's benefits for both the immune and circulatory systems. An important catechin found in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (also called EGCG), has been shown to be over 200 times more powerful than vitamin E in neutralizing free radicals that attack lipids in the brain.
